Han er den eldste sønnen til kong Charles III av Storbritannia, og Diana, prinsesse av Wales, og er den eldste sønnesønnen til dronning Elizabeth II av Storbritannia og prins Philip, hertug av Edinburgh. Han er nummer én i arverekkefølgen til den britiske tronen, og til tronen for 14 andre uavhengige stater i Samveldet av nasjoner.
Prins William ble utdannet ved fire skoler i Storbritannia og tok en grad ved Universitetet i St. Andrews i Skottland. Han tilbrakte deler av et hvileår i Chile, Belize og noen land i Afrika. Han ble utnevnt til løytnantsgrad i Blues and Royals-regimentet i det kongelige Husholdkavaleriet, der han tjenestegjorde sammen med sin bror, prins Harry, og to år senere fikk han pilotsertifikat ved å fullføre utdanningen ved Royal Air Force College Cranwell. Den 16. november 2010 ble det kunngjort fra Clarence House, hans hjem nær Buckingham Palace, at prins William og hans kjæreste gjennom flere år, Catherine Middleton, skulle inngå ekteskap. Bryllupet fant sted den 29. april 2011 kl. 12.00 (norsk tid) i Westminster Abbey i London. Han er også far til George Alexander Louis, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana og Louis Arthur Charles som han har med Catherine prinsessen av Wales. George ble født 22. juli 2013, Charlotte den 2. mai 2015. Louis ble født 23. april 2018.
