After scrutinizing research suggesting that the move wouldn't necessarily hurt the news program's ratings, the news division decided not to argue the decision.

Move by Phelps

The Phelps Dodge Corporation, the nation's largest copper producer, said it would move its corporate headquarters from New York to Phoenix by May 1987. Phelps Dodge's president, G. Robert Durham, said the move was intended to make the company's management more efficient. Phelps Dodge currently has regional headquarters in Phoenix, employing about 150 people. Mr. Durham said Phelps Dodge either would place on early retirement or lay off all but about a dozen of its approximately 100 employees in New York and would hire replacements in Phoenix.

Jacobs Lifts Stake

The Minneapolis-based investor Irwin L. Jacobs confirmed that he had raised his stake in the Borg-Warner Corporation to 7.4 percent, or 6.46 million shares, from 6.1 percent. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Jacobs did not amend his previous statement that he might seek control of the Chicago-based diversified manufacturer.

Micron Sees Loss

Micron Technology Inc., a semiconductor company based in Boise, Idaho, said that severe price drops for its dynamic random access memory chips would result in a loss for the quarter ending Dec. 4 that is expected to exceed the $5.8 million loss reported in the quarter ended Sept. 3. Micron attributed the price declines to intense competition from foreign suppliers and depressed industry conditions.

Ford Tractor Plant

The Ford Motor Company said it would close its last agricultural tractor plant in the United States by 1988 and transfer all tractor operations to Europe. Ford said the closing of the 12-year-old plant in Romeo, Mich., would cut costs and reduce capacity in the troubled agricultural tractor industry. The jobs of 650 hourly and 175 salaried workers would be eliminated, Ford said, but the division's headquarters would remain in Troy, Mich.
