NBC Seeks Stake in Foreign News Unit

Steven M. Rales and his brother Mitchell lead a group that holds an 8.7 percent stake in the furniture and shoe company and they have offered $2.1 billion for the rest.

LEAD: The Dow Chemical Company said it would buy back 10 million of its approximately 190 million shares outstanding. The repurchase, to be made over an indefinite period, will increase shareholders' equity, said Enrique C. Falla, a Dow vice president. The company has repurchased more than 20 million shares in nine buyback programs since August 1983; the latest was announced three months ago.

LEAD: United Airlines said it had signed a marketing agreement for its frequent-flier program with the Hyatt Corporation. The airline said its frequent-fliers will receive 500 miles credit for each stay at more than 125 participating Hyatt hotels, when they pay the corporate rate or higher. They also receive a 50 percent discount off a multinight stay at Hyatt with every 20,000 miles awarded by United.
