LEAD: The board of Advest Group Inc. approved a plan to buy back up to two million shares, or about 20 percent of the company's common stock. The intermittent purchases will be conducted in the open market, Advest said. The company is a regional brokerage based in Hartford. Its shares closed today at $3.75, up 50 cents each, on the New York Stock Exchange.

It said it had closed a plant in Lorain, Ohio, because of a shortage of interior trim materials. The Atlanta plant produces the Taurus and Sable mid-sized cars, while Kansas City produces Tempo and Topaz compact cars.

TRW to Shut Plant

LEAD: TRW Inc. said it would close its electronic products plant here and lay off 190 employees. Up to 40 workers could be transferred to TRW plants in Colorado Springs or San Diego within five months.
