It was last October when the country heard the charge that Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed Anita Hill. The Senate confirmed Justice Thomas, and he is sitting on the Supreme Court. But the issue is still being pursued, in a way destructive of our political system. This week a Senate special counsel questioned Nina Totenberg of National Public Radio, who first broadcast a report of Professor Hill's charge. Two weeks ago the counsel, Peter E. Fleming, questioned the print reporter who broke the story, Timothy Phelps of Newsday.

President Bush, his White House aides and his re-election strategists are all agreed: the President's showing in Tuesday's South Dakota primary, in which he captured 69 percent of the vote on a ballot that included no opposition, was a triumph. "It was a good victory," Mr. Bush told reporters as he arrived here for a seven-nation summit meeting about drugs. "Sixty-nine percent. Good victory."

Geico Stock Split

The Geico Corporation's board proposed a stock split that would increase the number of common shares. The split is subject to approval by Geico stockholders, who will vote on the proposal at the annual meeting on May 20. Geico, an insurer based in Washington, also increased its quarterly cash dividend to 75 cents a share from 57 cents, on a pre-split basis.

Conston to Cut Stores and Jobs

The Conston Corporation, the women's apparel retailer that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy court protection on Wednesday, said it planned to cut about two-thirds of its stores and staff. The company said it planned to close 66 unprofitable stores and sell the remaining 153 to raise funds owed to creditors. It dismissed 77 employees from its headquarters and distribution center, leaving 38 to continue operations.

Lopid Worry for Lambert

The Warner-Lambert Company said today that the Food and Drug Administration had raised concerns about whether the company would gain approval for a sustained-release version of Lopid that would strengthen the franchise of its leading drug. Following the announcement, Warner-Lambert's share price closed at $65, down $3.875, on the New York Stock Exchange.

TJX Closing Clothing Stores

The TJX Companies, which operates four retail store chains, said today that it would close 75 of its 576 Hit or Miss stores and posted a fourth-quarter loss after setting aside $50 million to cover potential future costs. The retailer also said it would privately place an issue of convertible preferred stock with several institutional investors. Proceeds will be used to reduce $50 million worth of 8.125 percent notes that mature in May 1993.

Law Supports Reporters in Hill-Thomas Case

To the Editor: The effort by the Senate's temporary independent counsel, Peter Fleming, to compel testimony from two reporters, Timothy M. Phelps and Nina Totenberg, for the disclosure of Anita F. Hill's allegations of sexual harassment against Judge Clarence Thomas, the President's Supreme Court nominee, is not only a flagrant and outrageous violation of the First Amendment in broad terms, as you suggest in "Newsday Refuses to Reveal Source" (news article, Feb. 14). The subpoenas issued to Ms. Totenberg and Mr. Phelps also fly in the face of numerous Congressional and judicial precedents for the rights of reporters to protect their sources.
