The New York Times Company said yesterday that it had completed the sale of the offices, equipment and subscription lists of The Gwinnett Daily News, a suburban Atlanta newspaper it had owned since 1987. The newpaper was published on Sunday for the last time. The property of the Gwinnett paper was sold to Cox Enterprises Inc., publisher of The Atlanta Journal and Constitution. The sale was announced last month but was subject to a waiting period for possible review by the Justice Department. That period has now expired.

Gov. Bill Clinton, who has grown increasingly frustrated and angry over questions about his draft status during the Vietnam War, lashed out at the press today, saying reporters had made no similar effort to query President Bush on his involvement in the Iran-contra affair. Mr. Clinton for the first time brought up reported comments by former Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger suggesting that Mr. Bush may have known about the arms-for-hostages deal. Mr. Clinton said Mr. Bush's actions may have demonstrated "support for illegal conduct."

Believing what you read about preventive medicine in popular women's magazines can be hazardous to your health. A review of the July, August and September issues of 10 such publications reveals not only that the health "advice" is a distortion of scientific reality, but that the disinformation about health is sponsored -- through advertising -- by the manufacturer of the leading cause of death. The science of disease causation and prevention -- epidemiology -- is neither new nor mysterious. Medical books state that about two million Americans die each year, and some one million of those deaths are preventable (that is, premature). Half of the preventable deaths (500,000) are caused by cigarette smoking and an additional 100,000 or so are the result of alcohol misuse and abuse. Most of the rest of the preventable deaths were caused by violence, drug abuse or failure to use life-saving technologies like seat belts, smoke detectors or tests for the early detection of disease.

Duties on Chryslers Seen

The European Commission is likely to impose import duties of up to 20 percent on Chrysler Corporation cars made in Austria, a commission official said. The decision is expected to be taken at the European Community executive commission's meeting on Wednesday. The Austrian Government has exceeded European Commission limits in giving state subsidies to Chrysler in the production of Voyager mini-vans, the official said.

DURR-FILLAUER TO MERGE WITH BERGEN BRUNSWIG

Durr-Fillauer Medical Inc. agreed yesterday to merge with the Bergen Brunswig Corporation, one of the nation's largest medical products wholesalers, for $33 a share, or about $470 million. The agreement ends two months of talks and lawsuits between Durr, a regional pharmaceutical and medical products company based in Montgomery, Ala., and Bergen, based in Orange, Calif. Bergen originally offered to acquire Durr for $26 a share, or $365 million, on July 7. Durr's shares gained 37.5 cents in over-the-counter trading yesterday, to $32.975.

ROCKWELL AGREES TO SPACE VENTURE WITH RUSSIANS

The Rockwell International Corporation said yesterday that it had signed an agreement to pursue space ventures with a Russian aerospace company. The Russian concern, NPO Energia, will develop hardware to allow American space shuttle vehicles to dock with Russia's Mir space station. The companies also plan to talk with NASA about using the Russian Soyuz TM spacecraft as a return vehicle for the Space Station Freedom project scheduled for later this decade.

VARITY UNIT TO SELL MF INDUSTRIAL TO MANAGEMENT

The Varity Corporation said yesterday that its Massey Ferguson group had agreed to sell its industrial machinery business, MF Industrial, to a group led by the unit's management for about $18 million. MF Industrial, based in Manchester, England, had sales of about $91 million in 1991. Varity, based in Toronto, said in a statement that the sale was part of its restructuring program. The proceeds will be used to reduce debt.
