Seven Indicted In 1992 Slaying Of a Journalist

Angered by his articles about the multibillion-dollar drug trade, leaders of a Colombian cocaine cartel ordered the murder of a crusading Spanish-language journalist who was slain in a Queens restaurant 14 months ago, Federal authorities said yesterday. The Colombian traffickers paid $20,000 for the killing, the authorities said, but most of the money went to other conspirators, leaving only a "a very small portion" for a 16-year-old gunman who calmly walked up behind the journalist, Manuel de Dios Unanue, and fired two shots into his brain as he finished a beer.

GLEASON SHARES RISE ON NEWS OF A STAKE BY BASS GROUP

The shares of the Gleason Corporation of Rochester rose $1.25 yesterday, or 9.8 percent, to $14, on the New York Stock Exchange on the news that a group including members of the Bass family of Texas had bought a 5.5 percent stake in the company. The news was disclosed yesterday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Gleason produces gears used in vehicle, aircraft and equipment drivetrains.

Reed Elsevier Deal

Reed Elsevier P.L.C. said today that it would buy a controlling stake in France's largest legal publisher, Editions Techniques, and had agreed to buy the rest of the company's shares later. Terms were not disclosed. Reed Elsevier, a joint venture of Reed International P.L.C. and Elsevier N.V., already owns Butterworths, a leading legal publisher.

Energy Deal for Prudential

The Parker & Parsley Petroleum Company said today that Prudential Securities Inc. had agreed to a $466.5 million cash price for its 35 oil and natural gas limited partnerships. Prudential had been talking to Parker & Parsley for weeks as it tried to fend off a $283 million tender offer for most of the partnerships by a company led by George B. Kaiser, a Tulsa oilman. Mr. Kaiser could not be reached and a spokesman declined to comment.

HERMAN'S TO ELIMINATE 225 JOBS IN RESTRUCTURING

Herman's World of Sporting Goods said yesterday that it was cutting about 225 jobs as part of the restructuring of merchandising, inventory and information systems at its New Jersey warehouse and corporate headquarters. The privately held sporting goods retailer filed for Chapter 11 protection in United States Bankruptcy Court in March.

HOECHST AND SCHERING DISCUSS AGROCHEMICALS MERGER

The German chemical companies Hoechst A.G. and Schering A.G. confirmed yesterday that they were negotiating to merge their agrochemicals businesses. A spokesman for Hoechst confirmed a report in the Frankfurter Rundschau yesterday, saying that a letter of intent on a merger was likely to be signed this month.
