The technological edge, combined with discount services, helped Schwab increase its customer equity 28 percent last year to $123 billion. In the first quarter, the company said, earnings rose a half-percent to $38.4 million, or 44 cents a share, from $38.2 million, or 43 cents, in the corresponding period in 1994.
