CBS Adding a Spanish-Language Channel

Signaling a long-delayed expansion into cable television, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation and its CBS subsidiary announced yesterday the acquisition of Telenoticias, a Spanish-language, 24-hour news channel now distributed in more than 20 million homes in 22 countries. Westinghouse expects to expand the channel's distribution throughout Latin America and Spain. Beginning in the fourth quarter, Westinghouse also plans to market the channel on cable television in American cities with significant Spanish-speaking populations, including New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

Gunmen Slay Irish Reporter Who Wrote on Gangs

Veronica Guerin, 33, one of Ireland's most prominent investigative reporters, was shot dead this afternoon after two men intercepted her car on a road in a Dublin suburb. Ms. Guerin, who specialized in reporting on criminal gangs, was killed on a main road near the town of Clondalkin, the police said.

COMPANY NEWS;$310 MILLION FOR AMOCO CONTAINER UNIT

Moving ahead with a large restructuring, Tenneco Inc., based in Greenwich, Conn., said yesterday that it would acquire the Amoco Corporation's plastic container division for about $310 million. The acquisition will increase the scope of Tenneco's packaging business, already the company's largest, as the once wide-ranging conglomerate narrows its focus to packaging and auto parts. The Amoco Foam Products unit makes polystyrene cups, plates, carrying trays and other products. It had 1995 sales of $288 million. Tenneco's packaging unit, which had revenue of $2.7 billion last year, makes such brands as Hefty trash bags and Baggies food bags.

Limited Inc. said yesterday that its board had approved a plan to file a registration statement for an initial public offering of its Abercrombie & Fitch business. Limited, which is based in Columbus, Ohio, spun off its Intimate Brands in an initial public offering in October as part of a plan to reconfigure the company. Abercrombie & Fitch sells casual apparel in 105 United States stores. It had 1995 sales of $236 million. Limited made the announcement after the close of trading. Earlier, its shares fell $1.125, to $19.75, on the New York Stock Exchange.

COMPANY NEWS;SIEMENS AND G.M. EXPLORE A LOCOMOTIVE VENTURE

Siemens A.G. said yesterday that it might form a joint venture with the General Motors Corporation to design and build diesel-electric locomotives. Wolfram Martinsen, president of the Siemens transportation systems group, and William Happel, general manager of the General Motors Electro-Motive division, have signed a letter of intent to study the venture, expected to be established in early 1997. The two have already cooperated to introduce heavy-haul freight locomotives in North America and won the world's largest locomotive order, worth $1 billion, in January 1994.

COMPANY NEWS;SECURE COMPUTING ANNOUNCES ANOTHER ACQUISITION

Continuing its buying spree, the Secure Computing Corporation agreed yesterday to acquire the closely held Enigma Logic Inc. for stock valued at $71.3 million when the deal was announced. Secure is paying 2.7 million shares for Enigma, which is based in Concord, Calif. After the announcement, Secure shares fell $4.75, to $21.75, in Nasdaq trading. Secure, based in St. Paul, said its network security services would be enhanced by Enigma's client-server identification, authentication and authorization software. In May, Secure Computing agreed to buy Border Network Technologies Inc. of Toronto for stock then valued at $187.5 million. Also last month, it bought Webster Network Strategies for an undisclosed amount.
