INTERNATIONAL A3-10 U.S. and Israel Walk Out Of U.N. Racism Conference The United States and Israel left the United Nations conference on racism in Durban, South Africa. Their action was prompted by proposed conference language condemning ''the racist practices of Zionism'' and describing Israel's treatment of Palestinians as a ''new kind of apartheid.'' Emergency meetings were convened to redraft the charged language in the hope of averting other walkouts.
